Speech Meet

The speech meet is designed to aid the development of students’ rhetorical skills. Therefore, all Logos students are required to participate in the speech meet.

Teachers will give students several class periods to use for speech meet preparation, and will provide guidance during the selection of the speeches and during the preparation period.

Every selection must comply with the category rules/requirements, as listed below.

Brief Description Of Speech Meet Categories

Literary Interpretation - (limited to secondary students) the interpretation of a selection so as to communicate the literary significance of the piece. The introduction would explain the significance of the speech. Students may use a manuscript, however, the piece should be memorized. Selection must be approved by the teacher.

Original Oratory - (limited to secondary students) a persuasive speech written by the student during the current school year. Students may use a manuscript, however, the piece should be memorized. Selection must be approved by the teacher.

Expository Speaking - (limited to secondary students) a speech, written by the student, to inform. Its purpose is to describe, clarify, explain, or define an object, idea, concept, or process. Students may use a manuscript, however, the piece should be memorized. Selection must be approved by the teacher.

Poetry - the recitation of a poem so as to communicate its literary significance. The piece must be memorized. Selection must be approved by the teacher.

Duet Acting - (limited to secondary students) Two students who will present one scene from a play or sketch of high literary quality (published works). The piece must be memorized. Selection must be approved by the teacher.

Reader's Theater - (limited to seniors), a group of three to six students effectively interpreting literature (dramatic or humorous, published works only). Students may use a manuscript, however, the piece should be memorized. Selection must be approved by the teacher.

Historical or Literary Speeches - the interpretation of a selection so as to communicate the historical or literary significance of the speech. The introduction would explain the significance of the speech. This speech must be memorized. Selection must be approved by the teacher.
